Steve Aoki’s Obsession With Latin Music Is Real And ‘Azukita’ Proves It 100% [INTERVIEW]
Steve Aoki might be of Japanese descent, but we know he’s low-key Latino!
Maybe it’s because he’s a Miami native that some Latino-something runs through his blood; after all, the 305 is a melting pot of cultures. Aoki has worked with lots of Spanish-speaking artists in the past and has even remixed J Balvin’s Mi Gente. If that’s not enough, let’s recall the time he played some Vicente Fernandez and El Sonidito during his EDM set like the true Mexican-at-heart that we know he is.

But it’s his latest single that proves to us that Aoki’s obsession with Latin music is real AF.
The renowned international DJ is currently making the rounds with his new single Azukita featuring Daddy Yankee, Elvis Crespo, and Play-N-Skillz, a song that mixes reggaeton, merengue, and EDM.
During a press junket at 2018 Ultra Music Fest, where the entire squad performed the song live for the first time, Aoki opened up about the collab. “To get a chance to work with the legends is already incredible,” he said. “I’ve been working with Latin artists all the time, but I’ve never done a Spanish song. You hear merengue, reggaeton, and EDM and it couldn’t have happened without this crew right here.”

Daddy Yankee, on the other hand, revealed the empowering reason why the track is called “Azukita” (sugar in Spanish). “When people hear Azukita, the beat makes you dance. That’s our purpose, for people to enjoy the song, but we invite them to listen to the real message,” he said. “It’s a message of unity and equality,” he added, comparing brown and white sugar to race. “We want people of whatever skin color to identify with our song.”
