Meet Sofia Espinosa: The actress who portrays Gloria Trevi in biopic
“Gloria” is a 2015 film based on the true story of Mexico’s most controversial pop-rock icon, Gloria Trevi. But don’t expect Trevi herself to star in her own biopic; instead, meet Sofia Espinosa, the actress who impeccably portrays the “Pelo Suelto” songstress.
The film traces back to the beginning of Trevi’s trajectory in the eighties and nineties and her controversial and toxic bond with her manager and then husband Sergio Andrade, telling the true story of their destructive relationship and Andrade’s abusive sexual behavior and all its consequences.

It also chronicles Trevi’s astounding fall from grace in 2000 when she was accused of running a sex cult and thrown in jail to her triumphant acquittal and release in 2004.
For Espinosa, taking the leading role to tell Trevi’s story was quite challenging, but not impossible. Check out everything she told Pulso POP about her breaking role in film.
Pulso POP: Were you a fan of Gloria Trevi prior to doing the film?
Sofia Espinosa: I used to like some of her songs. I liked her rebellious ways, her freshness and carisma. I was born in 1989, I didn’t enjoy the ‘boom’ of her career, but I do remember the controversy when she went to jail. It wasn’t until I attended the castings and found out more of her story that I really became a fan.
PP: How did you prepare for such a challenging role?
SE: I worked with a choreographer not only to learn her exact moves on stage, but also to see how she interacted with the audience. I also worked with them to develop the raspy voice she has. I worked with a girl from Monterrey to practice the accent. It took a couple of months.
PP: Have you met Gloria Trevi in person?
SE: No, there was a conflict with production. But in SXSW Festival she saw the movie and gave a few interviews where she talked of the film and said she recommends it to people. She even spoke highly of my role and for me that’s very important because it’s nice when the person you’re portraying can give you an opinion and recognize your work.
PP: Do you have any similarities with Gloria Trevi?
SE: The first thing I can identify myself with is her passion to sing and reach fame. I started acting when I was young and I love to aim for the roles that I want. For me, I can identify a lot with her.
PP: What other Latina artist would you to interpret in a movie?
SE: I don’t know, there’s so many singer. I’m not sure what other Latino personality has such a strong story [like Gloria Trevi]. But really, I can take any challenge.

PP: What are some reasons that everyone should watch “Gloria”?
SE: It’s a moving film with a love story that captivates you. It’s a movie that will make you sing and dance at the same time. It’s a film that will make you think about life.
PP: What upcoming projects do you have following “Gloria”?
SE: I have four movies that I’m going to premiere this year in Mexico and hopefully elsewhere. I’m also doing theater and other projects. I’d love for “Gloria” to help me put a foot in other parts of the world.
