Miss USA Nia Sanchez talks Latino roots and healthy habits
There’s something so beautiful and humble about Nia Sanchez, the 25-year-old beauty queen who represented the U.S. in the 2014 Miss Universe competition. Sanchez was first runner-up at the reputed pageant that took place in Doral, Miami, Fla. early this year.
Though she was unable to snatch the crown from Miss Colombia Paulina Vega, Sanchez is nothing but honored to keep reigning as a queen.

“Since Miss Universe I feel that it was a big shift,” Sanchez told Pulso POP of how her life has changed following the competition.
“Before when I was preppin’ for Miss Universe that was my focus. Now I get to focus on my career. I get to really enjoy my time as Miss USA. I’m getting married, I’m working on my career goals, and just enjoying my year even more,” she added.
Sanchez, who was born in Sacramento, Calif., is the first contestant from Nevada to be crowned Miss USA. She’s also of Mexican and German descent.
“I’ve been embraced by the Latin community ever since I won Miss USA. I’m all about empowering each other,” she said of her Hispanic roots.
Though she was born in the U.S., Sanchez said she stays connected with her Latino roots thanks to her beloved paternal grandfather Wilbur Sanchez.
“My grandfather is 100 percent Mexican and I just love being able to talk to him, hear his stories and learn more about my family culture,” she said.
Aside embracing her Mexican culture, Sanchez is also a coach and a fourth-degree black belt in taekwondo. “I just feel better when I’m active and when I’m eating healthy. Taekwondo is how I mainly get my physique,” she told Pulso POP.
But when she’s not kicking some butt, Sanchez has three go-to exercises to keep fit. “I do yoga poses, burpees and squats,” she said.

As for keeping on track with a healthy lifestyle, Sanchez says the keys are to stay consistent and to change the routine once in a while.
“Have consistency to stay active,” she said. “Change your workouts also, it gets boring to go to the gym. So switch things around, maybe a dancing class or kick boxing.”
