Besides being a composer, the young artist from Sinaloa, Mexico, is also a singer, producer, and sincere friend (as he claims on his Instagram). During his recent visit to Miami, where he formed part of the 2018 TeletonUSA, we chatted with Favela and got all the scoop on his latest single, Me Hubieras Dicho.
PulsoPOP News: Congrats, before anything, for your ASCAP award! Out of curiosity, what is the difference between composing a song for other artists and composing your own music?
Joss Favela: There’s not much of a difference. I simply try to write what I’ve lived. All of my songs and everything I sing comes out of inspiration. There’s times that I compose a lot of songs and it would be crazy if I kept them hidden. That’s why I like to pitch them to other artists. I never keep the best songs for me.
PPN: Out of all of the songs you’ve composed, whether they are yours or of other artists, which has been a huge hit?
JF: Te Hubieras Ido Antes. Julion Alvarez, Moderrato, Pipe Bueno all have their own versions. It had an incredible feedback. It’s one of those songs that continue being relevant even if it came out in 2012. There’s also Me Vas a Extrañar by Banda MS. A lot of people request it in the radios. I’ve had luck with my songs.
PPN: How did your musical career begin?
JF: At a very young age. I would sing and perform whenever I had a chance—at fairs, parties, parks. At 9, I had guitar lessons and when I was 13 I was in a reality show called Codigo Fama. I’ve always lived for music.
PPN: Me Hubieras Dicho is a very heartfelt song. Who or what inspired you?
JF: Women. But really, I’ve been going through a difficult time similar to the lyrics in the song. It was a good feeling to write my experience down in a piece of paper. The song is about a person who falls in love with a person but then realizes that the other person does not feel the same or is not on the same page.
PPN: Seeing that a lot of pop and tropical artists have experimented with the urban genre, would you like to do the same one day?
JF: I would love to collaborate with my songs and do a duet of some sort. It’d be a huge honor. In my new album, I have an interesting collaboration with an urban artist, Sebastian Yatra. It’s not an urban song nor a Mexican Regional song. We meet half way.

PPN: We already know about your artistic life, but what do you like to do in your free time?
JF: I’m a ranch person 100 percent! I love riding horses. We have a farm in Mexico with lots of animals, where we also grow our own foods. I have a studio there, where I spend most of my time recording. I like to read. I like to talk to my neighbors, especially the older people who knew my grandfather. I never met him, but my grandfather was loved by many people. I love getting together with his old friends and hear their anecdotes. I also like to ride my motorcycle.
