The 31-year-old artist from Puerto Rico, who became a household name with his 2011 hit single “La Pregunta,” is also mentoring new artists in the genre and feels very optimistic with the new urban movement.
We caught up with J Alvarez, and he talked to PulsoPOP about all of his new ventures and more.
Pulso POP: What are your thoughts on the new urban movement?
J Alvarez: I’m very happy. People know what we’re doing and they’re respecting our movement. I opened the doors to reggaeton again with my 2011 song “La Pregunta” and look where we are now with Plan B, who made an incredible comeback…and now J Balvin and Nicky Jam.
PP: What can you tell us about your upcoming single “Quiero Olvidar”?
JA: Hopefully it’ll be out in June of 2015. It’s a song about heartbreak. But I know a lot of people will like it because it has deep lyrics. A lot of people will feel identified with it.
PP: What advice can you give to aspiring new urban artists?
JA: Well, I have artists, I have a new artist called Carlitos Rossy and every day I’m pushing him and giving him advice. I didn’t have a mentor, so I try to find the positive in everything, I record with them in the studio, and I support them. That’s what we want, for the movement to keep growing. We’re a lot of people in this movement and I know there’s going to be urban music for a long time.

PP: Where will you be after your Europe tour?
JA: In August I’ll have an extensive tour in Colombia. And then in September and October I’ll be in New York. We have a lot of work thank God, which is what we’ve always wanted. We work hard to have a record label in collaboration with Sony and I’m very happy with how things are going.
