PULSO POP: How does it feel to be nominated to the Latin Grammys?
J ALVAREZ: We count with one nomination, the whole album, Album Urbano del Año and for me it is a huge privilege and achievement to be there competing for an award with Calle 13 and other known artists that are super talented.
PULSO POP: Is this your first time being nominated for a Latin Grammy?
J ALVAREZ: No, this is not my first time. I was nominated with my first album, Otro Nivel de Música. Now the story repeats, but this time is a lot more special because it’s the first album produced with my own business, On Top of The World Music, as multinational distributor. For me it is incredible and unbelievable that my album is nominated.
PULSO POP: Will you be performing at the Latin Grammys?
J ALVAREZ: That is under discussion with the academy, but anything is good for me. Just being part of the carpet and this movement is a great honor.
PULSO POP: How did your single, “Esa Boquita,” come to be?
J ALVAREZ: Esa Boquita is the third single from the current album I’m working on called La Forma de Camino. It includes songs Rico Suave, which went Gold and Haters featuring Bad Bunny and Almighty, which is going Platinum, it’s already Platinum actually, I was told not long ago. Now we are working with Esa Boquita and its success has been incredible with 40 Million views on Vevo.
PULSO POP: How was the video created?
J ALVAREZ: The video was produced by Ulysses Terrero, from the Terrero family and they came up with a concept of a mini series and told me “J you have that actor look, to be some sort of gangster. Let’s do this but at the end it will all be a lie for you to take the detective” and believe it or not it was incredible! Everyone loved how we were able to interpret the song and how it was acted out.
PULSO POP: Did you like playing the role? Do you see yourself acting more often?
J ALVAREZ: I have received many offers to act and it has been completely unexpected to be receiving so many offers. We have a high demand for it and my secretary is always telling me “J so and so called, they’re making a movie and are wondering if you have some time” but unfortunately my music agenda is so busy, my business agenda is super tight, plus I have my family and I haven’t had the opportunity to make time for them. But as soon as I finish my album, my project, I will take up that chance to participate in a movie that’s offered at that point in time.
PULSO POP: Is “Esa Boquita” part of the nominated album?
J ALVAREZ: No, you know I work super fast. I am the type of person who is always, always in the studio. The album they nominated me for this year, actually came out in 2016. Every year I aim to release a new concept. In 2016, I released an urban album with Hip Hop and Trap called Big Yauran and if you notice, Trap has exploded. I am always ahead of the game, I am so hardworking and passionate in what I do, that I am usually ahead two years in the industry. If you look, when La Pregunta was released, that style of music was not popular in any radio station. It was that what grabbed the record labels attention and and the producers, to go back to the genre. You now have Nicky Jam, Maluma, J Bavin, who have had immense success. I feel very happy with the current Urban music movement. I took the risk to do Hip Hop/Trap music and now, look, it is nominated to a Latin Grammy. Now you have Trap artists like Almighty, Bad Bunny, Anuel AA, who are known worldwide. Farruko has also launched his Trap album. All working very hard. Esa Boquita is part of a project that will come out in 2018, including Rico Suave, Haters, 6 De La Morning and of course Esa Boquita.
PULSO POP: Will you be on tour any time soon?
J ALVAREZ: Currently, we are working and focused on the album. We already named the tour “La Forma del Camino World Tour” as soon as the album is released we will discuss what the tour will be in 2018-2019.
