How much will you spend on a love letter by Frida Kahlo?
The world knows of Frida Kahlo because of her powerful paintings and portraits. Those who have their Frida 101 down pack, know that she was also a very passionate and romantic mujer.
Kahlo’s main squeeze was Mexican painter Diego Rivera, whom she deeply admired and respected. Despite her mother being against their relationship, Kahlo and Rivera married in 1929. However, it was later known that Kahlo also had a Catalan lover named Jose Bartoli, whom she met at New York Hospital.
After their encounter, Bartoli and Kahlo kept in touch via letters. Those love letters, nearly 70 years old and which have never been published, are now up for auction at the Doyle New York Auctioneers and Appraisers. Some of the cartas de amor are said to still have Kahlo’s lipstick marks.
“Although Kahlo was deeply attached to [Diego] Rivera, these letters suggest that she would have left him in order to live with Bartolí…. Her love for Bartolí was passionate, carnal, tender, and maternal,” wrote biographer Hayden Herrera in auction catalogue, reports Remezcla.
The collection of approximately 30 letters is expected to fetch between $80K and $120K. The winning bidder will not only nab the letters, but also drawings made by Kahlo and photos of her.
The auction, which is open to the public, will take place Wednesday morning at the Doyle gallery.
