Cristela: ‘Young Latinos can relate to my show’ | VIDEO
If you think dreaming big and achieving your goals is an impossible task, think again. Because the new “Cristela” sitcom promises to send an encouraging message to all those struggling young Latinos.
As its season premier approaches, starring actors Cristela Alonzo and Carlos Ponce chatted with VOXXI about what you can expect in this new family-comedy series set to air on ABC.
“The first season of ‘Cristela’ is learning more about my family; the entire show is based on my family,” Alonzo, 35, said to VOXXI. “I just want to be authentic and honest and show my side of things, I’m not trying to represent the entire Latino culture because that’s impossible.”
“Cristela” tells the story of a young Latina who attends law school and lives with her sister, brother-in-law, mother, niece and nephew. The pilot is a mirror-image of the struggles that the actress has faced throughout her life.
“The first season is really just getting to know these people that you’re probably and hopefully going to be on this journey with for years to come,” the well-known comedian said.
Co-star Carlos Ponce, 42, added: “Yes, they’re gonna love us!” The Puerto Rican star plays the role of Feliz, the brother-in-law who Cristela has a love-hate relationship with.
The forthcoming family TV series strives to offer a positive message to young Latinos living in the U.S.
“It’s 2014, a lot of us have parents and grandparents that came from another country – we’re at that point that we’ve become our own identity,” said Alonzo, who is Mexican-American.
“We’re American but we’re also connected to whatever culture we came from. We’ve become a hybrid of such an interesting world that’s hard to describe.”
The main character portrays a college student who wants to achieve big things, like becoming a lawyer.
“Young Latinos can relate to my character because we’re the generation that’s probably going to be the first of everything in our families.”
Alzono also stated that the generation of today does not realize how important their job is, describing young Latinos as the “pioneers of so many different things.” “A lot of us will be the first college graduates, the first doctors, the first lawyers, and it’s so cool to live in a time where we know we can do that and achieve it,” Alonzo told VOXXI.
“It’s a really happy show that shows real emotions,” Ponce said of the upcoming television show. “It’s very relatable and you’re going to be smiling the whole way through.
“This particular one, I guarantee you’re gonna want to watch with the whole family,” Ponce emphasized.
Alonzo, who was born in San Juan, Texas to Mexican parents, is proof that the impossible is possible.
“I am the first Latina to create, produce, star and write in their own Network show – I’ve done it,” she said to VOXXI. “This show is to prove that if I can do it, anyone else can do it.
“Cristela” will make its debut at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday October 10 on ABC Network.
