The stars who made Cantinflas come back to life | VIDEO
It’s been a magical journey for the cast and production team of the forthcoming Mario Moreno biopic, “Cantinflas.” VOXXI caught up with the two leading stars of the movie who opened up about their challenging roles.
The green-eyed Ilse Salas and Oscar Jaenada, of Spanish-Gitano origin, sat down with VOXXI to chit-chat about their latest roles, bringing the larger-than-life comedian back to the big screen. Their roles have become one of the most important to-date in their acting careers.
“It’s just a little bit of more work, we have to take down our Spanish accents a notch as actors and give a special touch to the voice, the melody or the accent,” said Jaenada about taking on the role of thelegendary Mexican actor.
Jaenada added: “It’s a bit more of work, and there are other things that are complicated.”
For Mexican actress Ilse Salas, portraying Mario Moreno’s leading lady, Valentina–who was of Russian descent–was not a hard task.
“In my case Valentina grew up in Mexico since she was six-years-old,” Salas said. It was a matter of finding the right mixture of accents to make her character sound believable.
Like Jaenada and Salas, many people around the world grew up watching Cantinflas films. The younger Hispanic generation may know of this comedic legend because of re-runs on Spanish television, holiday specials or our parents’ movie collections at home.
But once you step into the theaters to watch “Cantinflas,” you will discover the real life ofMario Moreno, which was also the case for both actors when they began filming.
“That’s the richness of this film. We know Mario Moreno and Cantinflas as one person, and our job was to separate Mario and Cantinflas,” Jaenada told VOXXI.
“It was in our best interest as actors to claim the roles and demonstrate the sacrifices that are behind those laughs and smiles,” he continued. “Cantinflas is the main guy, but what you will mostly see is the life of Mario, who is the creator of it all.”
The story of the humble and hilarious man who became known as the Mexican Charlie Chaplin will premiere on August 29th in theaters nationwide.
