Karol G Gets Real About Her Music & Love Life In ‘La Guerrera del Género’ [VIDEO]
Univision Digital is proud to announce the latest addition to its ongoing original digital programming series with the launch of “Karol G: La Guerrera del Género,” the story of an empowering woman breaking the mold in the urban music genre. The documentary, premiering March 19 on Univision Digital, explores the rise of Karol G as a tenacious female artist who eventually rose to the top of the male dominated urban music charts.
Karol G is Latin music’s biggest female breakout star of recent time. Her fusion of reggaeton, pop and R&B have positioned her in the top ranks of YouTube and Spotify’s Global Charts as one of the best-selling and most consumed artists in the world. The digital documentary “La Guerrera del Género” explores the challenges she and her family overcame so she could land a real shot at becoming a superstar in the music industry as well as her close friendship with superstar J Balvin, and her eventual rise to the top of the Urban Latin genre.
The Univision Digital entertainment crew led by Leo Suarez, director and writer, and Javier Cruz, producer, followed Karol G every step of her journey for the last six months from traveling to her native Medellín, Colombia to capturing content for her successful nine-city Nissan Road to Innovation Tour in Miami and Las Vegas, all to tell her story from two different angles—her personal and professional life—and how these two paths eventually converged. They spoke to close friends, family and musicians for the documentary with support from Horacio Rodriguez, vice president of marketing, Universal Music, Charlie Perez, national publicity director for Universal Music and Alex Rodriguez, Karol G’s manager.
“’Karol G: La Guerrera del Género’ is a great example of how Univision continues to innovate with new storytelling formats. We are excited to tell Karol G’s story of resilience in the face of many challenges and setbacks she experienced on her rise to stardom,” said Hilda Garcia, vice president of Digital Entertainment, Univision. “Karol G will inspire young women with a seemingly impossible dream to make it. There couldn’t be a better time to tell this story with the impact Urban Latin music has across generations, cultures and how the genre became part of the general market.”
Karol G is the first female urban artist to reach the Top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs with her hit singles “Ahora Me Llama,” “Mi Cama,” and “Culpables.” In February, she won two 2019 Premio Lo Nuestro Awards for Female Urban Artist of the Year and Video of the Year and she also won a 2018 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
