Gente D’Zona humbled with their Latin Grammy nods
For Randy Malcom, singer of Gente D’Zona, having a Latin Grammy nomination is a true blessing. From their native streets in Cuba to becoming a global success, the hot duo has a lot to celebrate.
Malcom and bandmate Alexander Delgado have been the island’s hidden gem for many years. The world discovered their captivating sound when they were featured in Enrique Iglesias’ version of Descemer Bueno’s original song “Bailando.”
Fused between the island and flamenco rhythms, the addicting single has been No.1 in the Latin Billboard charts for 23 consecutive weeks.
This explains its massive success not only in Latin America, but around the world. “Bailando” has even nabbed four Latin GRAMMY nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Urban Performance and Best Urban Song.
“It’s like a dream come true. Just to be nominated I feel like a winner,” Randy Malcom told VOXXI. “This is the biggest thing that can happen to an artist and I am super happy.”
Gente D’Zona, who formed in 2000 in Cuba, feel privileged to have worked with Enrique Iglesias, who in many ways has opened doors for them.
“Our relationship with Enrique is not a friendship, it’s brotherhood,” he said of the Spanish pop crooner. “He’s like another brother and he’s someone to admire.”
Though the monster hit can be a threat to fellow nominees, Malcom said he will not get his hopes up.
Malcom, who was born in Guanabacoa, Cuba and was a local percussionist, said he’s still the same guy despite the rise of “Bailando.”
“My life is still the same. I’m the same Randy that used to run barefoot as a kid,” he joked at an exclusive Hispanic Heritage Month party hosted by Hennessy VS at the MTV Tr3s headquarters. “Nothing has changed, I’m just happy to have accomplished my dreams.”
But Gente D’Zona’s dreams don’t stop there, as the duo, known for being one of the pioneers of “Cubaton,” has a new album and tour ahead.
“Our album is finalized and it has many collaborations from many different artists, it’s culturally diverse,” he said of the production that counts with collaborations from JenCarlos Canela, Chino y Nacho, Elvis Crespo, Maffio and more.
Their catchy first single called “Yo Quiero” featuring Pitbull, is already following the footsteps of “Bailando.”
Gente D’Zona will embark a tour starting November 1 in Miami, Fla. The full schedule can be found on their social media networks.
