Sammi Sanchez’s Version Of El General’s ‘Pum Pum’ Is The Anthem Of Our ’90s Dreams
Sammi Sanchez was born the same year that El General was taking the world by storm with Tu Pum Pum—1998. That’s why it only made total sense for the Mexican-American singer to drop her own version of the classic reggae-plena jam.
Sanchez kicked off her career in 2011 like most kiddos have done—making online covers on YouTube. Her indisputable talent was discovered by former American Idol judge, Randy Jackson.

She garnered attention from the music industry in 2016 when she dropped her single Girls Talk, co-written by some of the big dogs who’ve worked with artists such as Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and Usher. After making the rounds with the track, she released singles Deeper and Hombre. By this time, she was already considered one of the hottest rising stars of the year.
Fast forward to two years later and the 20-year-old Cali native has done it again—captivated our hearts with her music! In celebration of El General’s bombastic jam Tu Pum Pum’s two decades, Sanchez premiered her single Pum Pum featuring Colombian urban star Reykon.
“My new single ‘Pum Pum’ is basically an homage to El General’s hit song, ‘Tu Pun Pun,’ from the late 80’s,” she said to Pulso POP in a statement. “I grew up hearing El General’s music around my house as a kid, so it came natural to remake one of his classics and open up a new generation to his music. The video was so much fun to shoot. Reykon was amazing to work with, he brought such great energy to the video. He’s a really sweet & down to earth guy, looking forward to making more music with him in the future.”
The vibrant music video was filmed by Roxana Baldovin in Los Angeles and fuses Sammi’s sultry voice with Reykon’s sensual flow in a Dancehall club banger that’s clearly something out of out ’90s dreams.
