Camila Luna Takes Latin GRAMMYs By Storm With Her Trippy Caribbean Vibes

When I first wrote about Camila Luna —back in 2015— I was stoked AF!

Not only is she Miami-based like yours truly, but she’s a creative Latina making great fucking music. Music, which nowadays, is rarely heard on the radio. Her music is so fresh and unique that it even nabbed the attention of the Latin Recording Academy, not once, but twice!

Luna, just months after graduating from the University of Miami in 2015 became a Latin Grammy nominee for Best Pop/Rock Album with her 2014 production Flamboyan.

Come 2017 and the talented 24-year-old Puerto Rican has done it again. She’s now nominated for Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album for her album Flora y Fauna. 

She opened up all about it in an exclusive interview with Pulso POP.

PULSO POP: You’re nominated once again for a Latin GRAMMY, how does it feel? 

CAMILA LUNA: I’m really excited and proud of my album considering that the industry has changed a lot. Before, people listened to an album from beginning to end. Now, it’s not like that. I was super proud of Flora y Fauna. I was nominated once before as an indie/pop artist, but I didn’t expect it at all. I couldn’t believe it. I’m in the category against people like Shakira… I’ve idolized her since I was little.

PULSO POP: Do you recall what you were doing the day you found out?

CAMILA LUNA: When the nominations came out on the website at 10am on a Tuesday, I was giving a poetry class in UM. I gave my students and in-class writing assignment so I have time to look. As soon as I saw my name I left the room and called my mom.

PULSO POP: What can you tell me about your new single and video, Amor Frutero?  

CAMILA LUNA: Amor Frutero is off of my album Flora y Fauna. It’s a trippy song with that 1960’s Tropicana vibe, kind of like if you’re in Cuba and Cancun. The video was filmed at the only Mexican hacienda in Miami. We went and it was like we were transported to another time. It was perfect and very vintage. I also convinced my boyfriend to act in the video with me.

PULSO POP: How would you say these nods have opened doors for your career?

CAMILA LUNA: I’m really appreciative of everything that’s going on. I’m still doing my Masters, I still go to school, I go to work, I self-manage everything, and I live a completely 100 percent normal life, but it’s all very surreal. I thought that it was going to completely change my career, but it’s not really like that. For me, it’s been an opportunity to make connections and network.

PULSO POP: Tell me all about your new album, Flora y Fauna!

CAMILA LUNA: The album is pretty crazy, you can tell it’s very different from everything that’s playing on the radio right now. You can expect a lot of lyrics that are surreal and different types of melodies. I love everything from rock to pop to reggaeton to tropical sounds—you can expect a huge mix of things. I’m always aiming for my music to have a Caribbean vibe because I’m Puerto Rico, Mexican, and Venezuelan.

PULSO POP: So, who is Camila Luna?

CAMILA LUNA: I’ve always loved art and getting creative. I started to read when I was 3 and chapter books when I was 5. As a kid, I didn’t want to have any friends; in fact, books and puzzles were my things. From a young age, I knew I wanted to do something with writing and reading. I come from a musical family who had bands in Puerto Rico. I was super shy as a kid, but after awhile my uncle taught me how to play the guitar. I was writing poetry and started putting those things together. I self-taught myself for many hours in my room. When I was 18, I majored in poetry at UM and felt something was missing and always had this dream of making music. The rest is history.
