La Cuneta Son Machin modernize Nicaragua’s folk | VIDEO
If there is one thing that La Cuneta Son Machin is not lacking, it’s creativity and lots of energy.
That’s how this band from Nicaragua intends to take their local band profile to becoming a well-known group outside of the Central American country.
In fact, they are doing one hell of a job if you ask me.
La Cuneta Son Machin, or simply La Cuneta (meaning ‘sidewalk’), established five years ago in barrioCuidad Jardin in Managua, when a group of family and friends celebrated a traditional religious procession with their instruments.
They instantly captivated spectators around them and ever since have become one of the most popular bands in Nicaragua.
But what has really made these young and good-looking guys skyrocket in the local scene is their innovative sound of fusing Nicaraguan folk and chinamera with new music trends such as rock, funk and jazz.
Just imagine yourself rocking out to cumbia, literally.
The beauty of it all is that adults can relate to the folklore and cumbia, and a younger crowd can relate to the modern sounds.
It’s a win-win situation because any generation can adapt to La Cuneta’s way of revolutionizing Nicaraguan music.
With a short trajectory that began in late 2009, La Cuneta Son Machin has succeeded outside of Central America, already performing in U.S. cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Las Vegas.
They also showcased their talent and unique “rock sobaquiado” (a form of Nica dance) in Austin, TX when they kicked-butt at the 2013 SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festival.
As the “new kids on the block” at the festival, they garnered a well-deserved feature on CNN En Español.
The band, composed by Carlos Emilio Mejia (vocals), Augusto Mejia (bass), Carlos Luis Mejia (marimba), Cesar Rodriguez (keyboard), Fabio Buitrago (drums), Omar Suazo (guitar) and Ernesto Lopez (percussion), already has two albums, and are constantly working on new endeavors.
